This module is suitable for people who are working with clients where there is ambivalence and resistance to change. It is particularly applicable to working with clients with substance misuse problems and can also be applied to a wide range of behaviours. It will ensure that participants understand the principles and strategies of motivational interviewing; recognise resistance and develop skills to work ambivalence; identify motivation within a model for behaviour change; integrate motivational interviewing skills with core counselling skills and be able to carry out a brief intervention using motivational interviewing skills.

The aim of this course is to develop an understanding or relapse and relapse prevention. This will be helpful for workers who come into contact with clients with substance misuse issues, and who are making or have made, changes in their substance misuse behaviour, and who may return to their previous levels of harmful use. It is also applicable for work with clients presenting with problems in attempting to change, and maintain change with a wide range of addictive behaviours. Participants will explore the meaning of relapse and relapse prevention located within a model of Behaviour Change, and become aware of a range of well established methods of assessment and intervention drawn from CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), non directive counselling models and MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy).
This accredited course is assessed by the Department of Lifelong Learning UWB; successful completion of this module will result in 20 credits at Higher Education Level 5.

This module will help you gain insight and understanding into self-harming and suicidal behaviour. It will consider some of the cultural and historical features involved and discuss a range of bio-psychosocial and therapeutic approached concerned with suicide and self harm understanding and management. Client needs and risk management will be evaluated to help identify and minimise risk in relation to self-harm and suicide. The course will also discuss the concept of vicarious traumatisation – a cumulative transformative effect which may be experienced by those working with survivors of trauma.

Crack cocaine is widely viewed as a drug that creates unmanageable cravings. Compulsive patterns of use can be associated with drug and sexual health risk-taking, crime and violence. Crack cocaine has proved a challenge for users and drug services alike, with some questioning whether self-control or harm reduction are really possible. This course teaches practical harm reduction and self-control strategies for use with crack cocaine users, set within a review of the history of crack cocaine and a critical exploration of drug's use and reputation. |
