Good Practice By Agencies Within UK/Wales
Across Wales there are many service providers, agencies, SMATs and DIPs that have adopted some very good practices in assisting the development of substance misuse workers. We want to share these good practices with you.
For an example of these good practices please click on the links below. If you know of another example of good practice that others may learn from we would like to hear from you - please contact us.

Mapping CAIS’ Training Courses to Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS)
As an organisation, CAIS wanted to cross reference all of its training courses against the DANOS standards in order to be ready for the future, when its staff would need to be able to demonstrate their competence against these standards.
Process
Stage One - Meet with the person responsible for developing and delivering the training. Have the DANOS standards to hand or on a computer screen in front of you |

Stage Two - Compare the elements within each DANOS unit with the content of the training, for example:
Two aspects of CAIS’ one day ‘Drug and Alcohol Awareness’ training covers the signs and symptoms of specific substances including the three categories stimulants, depressants and hallucinogens. The training also covers other specialist services available and what the referral process involves, covering the four tier services. Therefore, this element of the training course aligns to DANOS Unit AA1 ‘Recognise Indications of Substance Misuse and Refer Individuals to Specialists’. |
Stage Three – Repeat the above process for the entire course contents, ensuring that all relevant DANOS units are identified.
|
Stage Four – Record all DANOS units that the course aligns with so that the course attendees know which DANOS units they are being trained in. |
Stage Five – Review on a regular basis, either annually or whenever the course changes. |
Experience of process
The process involved a lot of detective work in the interpretation of the DANOS units, including the full breakdown of each standard. It was not always obvious which DANOS unit each aspect of the course aligned to, and it was necessary to delve beneath the summary of each unit to read the full breakdown of the standard before making a judgement as to whether or not the course aligned to that DANOS unit.
Challenges encountered during the process included ensuring that all of the elements within each DANOS unit were also sufficiently covered by the course content, and that the course content did not just align to the DANOS unit title or summary. It was important to read the entire breakdown of the unit before assessing whether the course content covered that DANOS unit.
The benefit that this exercise has brought to CAIS, is that as an organisation, we are now in a position to offer both staff and external customers the opportunity to access training which is consistent with the needs of the field. When employees attend training that is aligned and mapped to DANOS they are more easily able to demonstrate their competencies in-line with the industry’s requirements, i.e. DANOS. This also helps them identify training that meets professional development needs which are often articulated in the form of DANOS units as well.

WGCADA & Use of DANOS
WGCADA have used the DANOS standards to help shape job descriptions. Attached are some examples of how WGCADA have achieved this in a number of different posts.
The Centre encourage job descriptions to include the links with DANOS and although they would like to publish all vacancies, those with DANOS are particularly welcome’
